Tips of the Season
October - December 2006
Organized to Shop
Organized to Shop.

Ready, set, shop! Starting in late October, the holiday shopping season is upon us! Each year we vow to get this part of holiday festivities more organized. Use these strategies as you share holiday gift giving with those you love.

Remember all those gifts you have purchased throughout the year on sale or discounted? Create a gift “storage” area to keep your purchases together. Set aside a bin, closet or cabinet just for this purpose. Make a list, adding to the list as you add items, and post the list on the lid or door so you always know what you have on hand. Having “little somethings” like jams, wine, or candles for hostess gifts will save you time throughout the year as well.

Shopping has never been easier with the internet. Shopping online can save time and often money. Most sites ship directly to the recipient, meaning you can miss those long post office lines too. Go directly to sites that carry what you want and need to avoid impulse buying and over spending. Create an inbox folder for the “receipts” for the items you purchase online. Even if your gift choice is obscure, “googling” is sure to find that special something!

Be thoughtful of those you love by giving a “consumable” gift. Magazine subscriptions, movie tickets, museum memberships, or gift certificates for services like massages, classes, or dinner all indulgences we truly value. Plan ahead to get these gifts delivered timely to relieve that last minute stress. If you receive an unwanted gift certificate, you can swap with others at the website www.swapthing.com ».

Set aside a time to have fun with wrapping your gifts! In the fall, purchase holiday paper from school fundraisers so that you are ready to wrap. Not only will you support your local schools, you will have special paper and ribbons just for the holiday season. An evening of holiday music, gifts to wrap and a holiday beverage make wrapping festive!

The holiday season is not about the gifts we give. However, being organized can make your holidays about the real meaning of the season! Happy Organizing and Happy Holidays!
